intro

Basement is a subterranean techno haven housed underneath the 50,000-square-foot music and arts venue known as Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens. Often compared to Berlin’s Berghain, Basement draws inspiration from the raw energy of Eastern European raves and emphasizes music above all else (no photos or videos allowed, and no bottle or table service offered). Basement is characterized by its large dance floor, old factory doors, and dense brick and concrete columns whose rough edges have been purposefully left untouched. The stripped down, almost secretive vibe contrasts with many of NYC’s flashier nightlife spots, making Basement a favorite for fans of true underground music. Pro tip: Basement is also known for its particularly discerning door policy, where visitors who don’t know the headliner and are just trying to have a fun night out are often turned away. Make sure to do your research!

history

The Basement NYC opened underneath Knockdown Center in 2019. Originally part of a 20th-century glass and door factory, the industrial space retains an unfinished, dark aesthetic that perfectly complements the intense, minimalistic vibe of the music. The venue embraces its industrial roots, maintaining the gritty aesthetic that makes it perfect for home for the (literally) underground music scene. Regarded as the first club in New York City specifically dedicated to techno, Basement has hosted an impressive lineup of both renowned and up-and-coming artists since its inception. Emphasizing authenticity over luxury, Basement’s commitment to immersive sound, community and pure, uncommercialized underground culture has solidified its position as a cornerstone for techno in New York City.
